Different Ways Of Thinking

A positive attitude is essential if you are to succeed in sales. If you approach a task with the attitude that it ‘can’t be done’ what you are likely to do, given human nature, is go on to find other reasons and further reasons why it is impossible to do the task.

On the other hand if you think and believe it can be done, what happens is you become creative and innovative in your search for solutions. You let your imagination go, you problem solve, you search and dig deep.

Here’s a little story to illustrate the point taken from ‘Selling: The No-Nonsense Guide’….

There was a small company in rural Ireland that manufactured shoes. As a shoe manufacturer, they were of course aware of globalization.

Not to be outdone they decided to expand their operation. They, in their wisdom, decided to send a salesperson to the desert to sell shoes. Duly a salesperson was recruited and dispatched to the Sahara desert.

Two weeks passed and they got a phone call. A dejected salesperson was on the phone: ‘It’s no use, nobody wears shoes here.’ The luckless salesperson returned home. But companies being companies another was recruited and sent off to the desert.

Two weeks passed and not a word. Another two weeks and the sales manager decided he should phone. He eventually contacted the shoe salesperson. The seller apologised for not being in touch. He explained he was too busy. He said in a hushed, but excited voice, ‘I’ve discovered that no one has shoes out here, I can’t believe my luck!’

In sales attitude is everything.
