Beating Procrastination
August 30th, 2010
Do you often find yourself putting off important tasks? Doing everything and anything to delay essential work, by finding trivial chores that ‘must be completed’ beforehand? Waiting all day until you’re in the ‘right mood’ to get down to work? Don’t worry you’re not alone; procrastination is far more common than you think. However, some people are so chronically affected that it hinders them from achieving things they’re capable of and disrupts their careers.
Try controlling this irritating habit by attempting to recognise when you start procrastinating; understand why it happens; and take active steps to better manage your time.
The reason we procrastinate is very simple- most of us would rather do something more enjoyable than work. The problem is severe procrastinators actually end up working longer hours than their more work-driven colleagues, as they spend so much time working on putting off work!
Sometimes this is down to the fact that you cannot distinguish between urgent and important tasks, and invest too much of your time on tasks you consider urgent, but which aren’t actually important. You may feel that you’re doing the right thing by acting fast, or you may just be driven by the person with the loudest demands
Another cause for procrastination is feeling overwhelmed by the task and seeking comfort in a task you are 100% capable of completing. Whatever the cause, the unpleasant result is that you have very little time left for vital tasks, and frequently end up eating into your own free time.
Although irritating, procrastination is easily combated; if you’re honest with yourself, you probably realise when you’re doing it. Take a Time-Management Course and use a prioritised To-Do list to help you get vital tasks done first.
